His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera was elected the sixth President of the Republic of Malawi on June 23rd, 2020. Saulos Klaus Chilima is the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi. His Excellency Dr. Chakwera is a Theologian and Politician. He won the Presidential Elections following the nullification by the Constitutional Court of the result of the previous Presidential elections which were held on 19th May, 2019, citing massive irregularities.

Declaration of State of Disaster on the Effects of Cyclone Freddy

His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, has noted with grave concern the devastation that Cyclone Freddy is currently bringing to most districts in Malawi's Southern Region.

In view of this, His Excellency has exercised the powers vested in him under Section 32(1) of the Disaster Preparedness and Relief Act (Cap 33:05 of the Law of Malawi) and declared a state of disaster in the Southern Region of Malawi, particularly the areas comprising the jurisdiction of:

Blantyre City and District

Chikwawa District

Chiradzulu District

Mulanje District

Mwanza District

Neno District

Nsanje District

Thyolo District

Phalombe District

Zomba City and District

Accordingly, Government is already responding to the emergencies, rendering urgent assistance to all affected districts, and appealing for local and international support for all the families affected by this disaster.

REMINDER ON TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR MALAWI

 

The Presidential Task Force on Corona Virus has provided the following travel requirements for Malawi through different points of entry including the airports and land crossings that became effective 1st June 2022 :

 

1. All incoming travellers, including Malawians, who are fully vaccinated and have an electronically verifiable COVID-19 vaccination certificate are no longer required to produce a COVID-19 PCR certificate prior to entering the country.

 

2. All incoming travellers, including Malawians, who are not fully vaccinated or don't have an electronically verifiable COVID-19 vaccination certificate are required to produce a negative PCR based COVID-19 certificate that is not older than 72 hours at the time of arrival in the country.

 

3. COVID-19 PCR certificate and or full COVID-19 vaccination certificate requirement for outgoing travelers depends on the destination country's requirements.

 

4. All children below the age of 12 years are to enter Malawi unconditionally (accompanying vaccinated parents/guardians).
